The Stop Dieting Diet: Forget Everything You've Read

By Richard Helfant "You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it." - Margaret Thatcher "One swallow does not a summer make." Aristotle "Fed Up!" read the cover of Newsweek, which went on to ask, "Is there anything left we can eat?" No area of health has been more confusing and misunderstood than diet and nutrition, especially as related to cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease. The message is everywhere. Good Morning America is featuring weight-loss tips every day this month. AOL tells its subscribers via e-mail that it's "Time to lose your spare tire." Magazines lining grocery aisles exhort you to "Lose 10 pounds this month!" According to US News, Americans spend more than $33 million a year on diet books, foods, programs, gadgets and DVDs in the hopes of losing weight. Yet, about two thirds of the American population remains overweight. Some 30 percent are obese and half of them are dieting. So, it's become crystal clear that dieting does not work! The solution is simple: stop obsessing about every morsel you put in your mouth. Most people think that eating properly means cutting out everything they love, and thus feeling deprived and dissatisfied. But the facts are that eating healthily and reducing weight does not have to involve pain and sacrifice. In all likelihood, many of your favorite foods are healthy, and many of your favorite recipes can be modified easily to become healthy. Proper eating requires only a few simple adjustments. You need follow only one rule and keep one commitment. The rule: cut down the fat by making simple substitutions. This decreases not only cholesterol levels but also the number of calories. The commitment: Set aside your preconceived notions about food and become a thoughtful eater. Being a thoughtful eater mans thinking clearly and objectively about the food you eat; making adjustments and substitutions more knowledgeably and comfortably; experimenting and learning what works best for you; introducing changes over time rather than abruptly; AND, allowing for slips. Being a thoughtful eater also means becoming interested in learning relevant information about food and health. Below are some suggestions for dietary changes. These are meant as general guidelines. You may want to adjust some or make other changes in your own eating plan. Seven Substitutions: l. Use skim or low-fat milk and cheese and nonfat yogurt in place of whole mile and regular cheese, butter of ice cream. 2. Eat more fish and chicken (with the skin removed) and complex carbohydrates such as pasta, brown rice and whole-grain bread. Eat lean cuts of mean with the fat trimmed, and in smaller (e.g. 4-ounce) portions. 3. Use egg whites and/or egg substitutes instead of egg yolks. 4. Avoid high-cholesterol foods such as liver, kidney, brain and sweetbreads. 5. Cut back on processed meats such as sausage, bologna, corned beef, pastrami, salami and hot dogs. Try chicken or turkey breasts with mustard instead of butter and mayo. 6. Adopt healthier methods of cooking: boil, stream, broil, roast or bake instead of frying. 7. Choose salad dressings and sauces made with olive oil and soy and avoid saturated oils. Flavor your meals with herbs and seasonings instead of butter and fatty sauces. Lastly, by making food label evaluations a routine part of your shopping, you will become more knowledgeable and conscious about food and naturally more aware of the amount of fat you eat. Remember: compulsive eating leads to guilt, more compulsive eating and ultimately to defeat and resignation. Stay aware, make conscious choices, learn form your experiences, and stay with your plan. As Gandhi once said, "We cannot in a moment get rid of the habits of a lifetime." Richard Helfant, MD, a Harvard-trained cardiologist. Courageous Confrontations, Dr. Helfant's latest work, is about how to use the mind-body relationship to combat disease. Many stories in the book include examples of diet and weight loss. The Devil Made Him Do It

By Kenneth C. Hoffman The night before a cold wind whistled through the cracks in the door, whiskery sounds of hard snow hit the window panes. Three days of blizzard conditions finally broke with the appearance of a brilliant sun in a crystal sky. The plows had been through and the country roads glistened with fresh packed snow. No salt or sand marred its surface, just four inches of glazed, ice-rink-hard white ice. Perfect for sleigh riding. One year apart, my brother and I couldn't wait to rescue our three man Radio Flyer sleigh from the rafters of the garage. A pumice stone quickly rid the runners of rust, our tongues sticking out in concentration. Three layers of flannel shirts, woolen sweaters were topped by wool plaid anorak jackets. Double gloves, some with holes, insured against frostbite, stubborn metal catches on galoshes firmly locked against the weather. The previous summer we roamed the country roads on our bikes, ranging as far as six miles from home. A few miles to the north, our road started to climb. Hinting at the first Kittatinny mountain tucked in the northern corner of the state, the almost imperceptive rise in altitude gradually segued into a hill of considerable steepness, culminating in a dangerous cut at its peak. Locally known as four mile hill, it probably boasted a continuous rise for only two and one half miles. The exciting flip side of the coin was the promise of a speedy fall from the heights on the downside of the hill. After lunch, no mention of this adventure passed our lips as we trudged our way alongside the road in the crunch verve. Unable to pass up every hill we saw on the way, our twelve year old bodies started to flag in strength. Being brothers, there was of course some sibling rivalry. But our parents made a big deal out of sharing and taking turns, the only way of keeping the squabbling down to a low roar. So we took turns steering, even pulling each other on the level stretches, counting the seconds in a sing-song voice. We would pretend we were Indians, marking the trail for the way home with snowballs exploded on tree trunks. By now snow filtering down into our galoshes had turned our toes to cold granite, the pain slowly fading into numbness. Indefatigable in our climb, we leaned into the hill, our sled whipping behind us, tugged relentlessly by gravity. Once we let go of the rope and had a panicky moment floundering down the hill after it, ending in a heap at the bottom of a ravine. After that we were more careful. The final stretch loomed like a ski run in front of us. A setting sun turned the snow to orange, purple clouds coming up from the west. Soon it would be dark, reminding us of dire warnings of what would happen to us if we stayed out too late. Panting, we rested at the peak, standing on the sleigh for a better view down the valley. No cars had passed us in the last half hour, so we felt safe in testing fate in the form of icy hill, gravity, and being late for supper. As soon as our breathy clouds diminished, we felt ready for the fast ride home. Suddenly, my brother flopped on the sleigh and pushing off down the hill with wind milling arms, quickly attained a speed of twenty miles per hour, diminishing in the distance. Stunned, I stood there screaming his name, shouting "Stop!, stop!, wait, wait! Admitting defeat, I let out a weak 'wait'. Stuffing my scarf into my coat and fighting back tears, I slowly marched down the hill, slipping and falling in the dusk, the sharp ice ripping through my wet corduroy pants. I was tired, cold, hungry and lonely all at the same time. Added to that was the hate I felt for my brother for doing me this terrible trick. Imagining all kinds of punishment for staying out after dark, I planned my revenge in the form of sand in his shoes, itching powder in his sheets and a good punch in the jaw when I got back. Later, after the remonstrances from my worried parents, all I had strength for was a hot bath and supper by the fire. My brother just laughed. Reminiscing is a favorite pastime. 3 Easy Steps to Buying the Right Engagement Ring

By Brandon Hopkins You've made the plunge, you've decided to get married. Congratulations! Don't think about it now, but there are many things you need to think about before the big wedding day comes, and one of them is how are you going to find the right engagement ring? Before the stress settles in, here are 3 easy steps to finding and buying the right engagement ring. 1. Go home before you buy. If you think you have found the right ring, go home. While you are at home, think about the ring you are about to buy. Does the ring have the look you want? Will it fit your lifestyle? Most people wear their engagement rings for life, so finding the right engagement ring shouldn't be a shopping trip taken lightly. When you are at home thinking about your engagement ring, think about whether or not it fits your lifestyle. Are you always on the go or into sports? If so, you may not want a large solitaire with a high setting. 2. Ask around for references. This goes for online and offline shopping. Do you know anyone who has bought from this jeweler or jewelry store? If not, find someone who has, and see what they thought about their transaction. Honesty is usually the best policy, but on occasion, you will find dishonest people. That goes for all walks of life, and shopping for an engagement ring is no different. If the diamond or stone you are buying has a pretty price tag, you may want to get the values of the ring verified by a third party. You can have someone check the color, clarity, etc of the ring before you have made your purchase. 3. Make the deal. Would you pay full sticker price for a car? Most people wouldn't. The same goes for engagement ring shopping. Most prices are negotiable, and you can usually haggle your way to a discount or upgrade. Don't be afraid to ask if that is the best price, and how much of a discount they can give you. Knowing these 3 easy steps before buying your engagement ring will help you find the right ring, get a good deal and be happy with your engagement ring for life! Straight Talk About Stretch Marks - Treatment and Prevention

By Melissa Brooks One of the most common skin care questions asked is: How do I get rid of Stretch marks? There are ways to treat these unsightly marks and ways to avoid getting them in the first place. If you understand some fundamentals, providing skin care for yourself is easy. Let's get some basics down first, then we will move on to how to get rid of stretch marks. If you looked at a cross-section of your skin, it would look like a lattice or mesh of connected tissue. As you age, this mesh loses its ability to hold moisture. It also becomes weak - kind of like a rubber band that has been stretched over and over again. In fact, that is a perfect way to describe it - your skin loses elasticity. This happens because levels of various proteins in your skin are broken down with time. These proteins are needed to keep the skin firm and elastic. This is an important concept, because this is at the heart of stretch marks. Stretch marks are formed because when the skin stretches very rapidly, collagen synthesis is disrupted and the dermis (the under layer of skin) develops tiny micro tears. These show up as stretch marks. So what can you do? For clarification - we are talking generally about abdominal stretch marks caused by pregnancy. Stretch marks also show up on people who gain a lot of weight and even on body builders. For our purposes, let's just talk about the stretch marks that are most common. Just keep in mind that the prevention and treatment is consistent for various types. Some key points in the treatment and prevention of stretch marks: First, gain slowly. The skin is remarkably elastic, but it can't handle super-fast growth. When you become pregnant, try to stick to your doctors recommended weight gain recommendation. And just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you should start eating 5000 calories a day! Just try to be sensible about what you eat and how much you eat - this will prevent a dramatic weight gain and thus help prevent stretch marks from forming. Second, lotion up! You have got to moisturize. Cocoa butter is great for pure moisturizing power. Find a rich, balanced moisturizer containing cocoa butter and apply it regularly. It is best to apply it right out of the shower - our skin is very receptive at that time. Be generous with the amount - it will absorb. If you can, apply it twice a day. This is a great way to bond with your partner too - have him rub the stretch mark cream into the belly! If you already have them, there are ways to get rid of stretch marks. There are products that can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Most work by helping to stimulate production of collagen and elastin in the skin, aiding in the repair of micro tears and visible marks. Please remember, it is important to recognize that there are many stretch mark creams available on the market. Many should not be used during your pregnancy. If you are trying to prevent or get rid of stretch marks, please talk to your doctor before using any product that may contain chemicals that may affect your baby. Street Theater Marketing and the Naked Cowboy

By Cathy Stucker Several major corporations have launched a new type of advertising campaign. They hire actors, musicians and other performers to promote their products and services on the streets of major cities. The promotion may be obvious, such as musicians singing songs about cell phone use on street corners, or it may be more subtle (perhaps even slightly deceptive). In either case, the idea is to bring marketing to customers in different, unexpected ways. A cell phone company hired actors to pose as tourists at several New York attractions, and ask passers-by to take their pictures with a new phone. Other actors took the phones to hot nightspots and other locations. These actors did not identify themselves as actors or marketers, and the people they encountered may have believed they were simply customers using the new phone. Although the technique used in this case was considered by many to be deceptive, the idea of using performance to sell is not necessarily wrong. Another cell phone company hired musicians to stand on street corners and in other high-traffic areas and sing songs about using cell phones safely and courteously. In that case, it was clearly a marketing message, but delivered in a unique and entertaining way. Of course, this isn't limited to the big guys. This is a form of guerilla marketing that can be done on a small budget, too. The Naked Cowboy has used street performances to attract lots of attention for his singing career. Although he hasn't had a hit record, he does have a web site where you can hear his songs, view his photos, and buy products (including a CD, t-shirts and more). Use your imagination to develop a piece of street theater that will ethically create positive buzz about your business. Your goal may be to attract a crowd to hear your sales message, get media attention or simply create greater awareness of your company and products. Copyright Cathy Stucker. Etiquette on Sending Wedding Gifts

By Chrystal Holman Wedding is a time of joy for the couple, parents, family, friends, and even for the colleagues and acquaintances who are invited to attend the ceremony and reception. In order to celebrate the wedding everyone who attends traditionally will send or bring a gift. We all know when a gift is given it is usually the thought that matters and not the gift itself. However, giving the right wedding gifts is important. When two people get married they usually start a new life together in a new home and they have immediate needs that can be partially covered if the guests would send or bring the right gifts. These wedding gifts dont have to be very expensive. The thought that goes into picking the wedding gift is far more important. It does not help to send a gift that will be returned or tossed in a box. Here are a few pointers to wedding gifts etiquette that close family and friends will usually follow. Wedding gifts etiquette calls upon the couple to create a wedding gifts registry where they can list all the items they require and/or would like to receive. Family and friends can browse the registry and purchase gifts from the list. There is no price limit and there is no obligation in the wedding gifts etiquette. Nevertheless, if the guests stick to the list they will spend money on something that the couple truly need and will appreciate. If the couple does not create a wedding gift registry the wedding gift etiquette calls upon the good sense of all guests to find out as much as possible what the couple requires and what would be the best wedding gift, keeping in mind their budget. While wedding gift etiquette does not specify how much to spend, one needs to be sensible and keep in mind that it is a special day and the gifts received are a way to cherish and remember this special day. Another way to keep with the wedding gift etiquette is to give the couple a gift card and let them choose their gift of choice or put it towards something else they need. Weddings are the perfect time to show someone how much you care and love them by the gift you choose. Pick it with taste and send the gift to arrive a few days before the wedding. This way your gift can be added to the gifts presented by those who attended the wedding in person. Often, etiquette on sending wedding gifts has a lot to do with simple common sense. Chrystal Holman recommends these wedding favors and bridal gifts.
